Roger Ailes asked HCQ to contribute to Fox.

The death today of Roger Ailes, former CEO and founder of Fox News, brought back some personal memories to the editor of the Hillary Clinton Quarterly.

It was in the early 90s before Fox News actually went on the air. Ailes called me, Frank Marafiote, because he had read in the papers that we were doing a newsletter about then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. There was an assumption among many in the media that our mission was to slander Hillary and promote some of the more outrageous stories coming out of Little Rock. (See our story, Sleaze for Sale).

Ailes, like others, assumed we were anti-Hillary and could offer his new news organization negative, “inside information” about her. Our phone conversation was very brief. I didn’t know Roger Ailes and Fox News back then was a non-entity. I had other things to do and politely (I assume I was polite) and declined the request to be contributor.

Given the antipathy I feel these days about the network of Sean Hannity and (formerly) Bill O’Reilly, it’s a relief to know HCQ was never a part of that journalistic cesspool.

A beautiful piece of ass for Donald Trump.

What really matters to Donald Trump.

My grandfather The Barber used to subscribe to Esquire magazine for his shop. While my brothers were getting their buzz-cuts (so that Grandpa would have plenty of time to artly trim the locks of his namesake), I read the magazine, not quite sure if the nuns at St. Philip’s would have a problem with it. All I recall is that I DID read the articles and learned more than a 12-year old should know about being a man in the 1960s. I also learned something about great prose and what it looked like.

I still subscribe. Grandpa would be proud. Today in my email “The Esquire Classic Team,” whoever they are, reminded us of the many profiles and interviews they’ve done about Donald Trump.

At the top of their list was a circa 1980s profile by Harry Hurt III in which Trump says, “You know, it really doesn’t matter what they write [about you] as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.”

I wonder how that would look on a Trump bumper sticker? I’d edit it down to “Trump, a beautiful piece of ass.” My version, I think, gives us the true essence of this narcissistic ego-maniac. He really means that he has a beautiful ass. I’m not one to judge, but perhaps the Log Cabin Republicans, who’ve been pretty much left out of Trump’s version of America, could weigh in on the issue?

Hillary the dominatrix

Hillary the dominatrix?

Editor’s note: Remember when politics used to be fun? Back in 1993 this cover photo from Spy magazine gave most of us a good chuckle. Compared to the truly vile accusations being made about Hillary and Bill Clinton, this was a reminder not to take ourselves too seriously.

Michelle Obama thinks she has it bad with a few tame parodies of her and her husband showing up on the Internet.

We should take a moment and bow our heads in thanks to the lunatics at the now defunct Spy magazine for putting Hillary on their front cover. It was February, 1993. Hillary was in charge of everything but Bill’s sex life.

This was every man’s worst nightmare — or fantasy– and every woman’s secret jealousy. Of course, Hillary is smiling as she flaunts her stuff and cracks her whip.

How else could it be?
