Hillary Clinton with Barack Obama

Loss in ’08 energizes “Ready for Hillary” today.

Today the New York Times reported that “Ready for Hillary,” the group trying to build support for Mrs. Clinton, has raised more than $1.7 million for the former first lady and secretary of state.

If you think this is just politics, you’ve been living on another planet. For most Hillary supporters, this is personal. The people who are giving money and time to make Hillary president have a grudge that motivates them. There’s a feeling that the Democratic nomination was stolen from Hillary in 2008. The Obama team didn’t “play by the rules” and Hillary lost because she did follow the rules of the party.

We all remember, don’t we, the bitterness that lingered for an unusually long time towards our new president and his White House staff? When asked to contribute to the Administration, people straightened up and did their duty. But everyone still has a scar inside. They can feel it. The only thing that will make it go away is for Hillary to become President Hillary.

Hillary’s supporters learned from the experience and are determined that it will not happen again. Secretly they will tell you that Obama has been something of a disappointment and that Hillary would not have made the same mistakes. Probably not. And every time Obama stumbles, there’s just one more piece of evidence that Democrats made the wrong choice in picking Obama over Hillary.

So now the “Ready for Hillary” group has raised $1.7 million, which really is just a drop in the bucket of the $100+ million she will need to run a campaign. But it’s a start. And I think die-hard Hillary supporters feel good knowing they’ve taken an important firs step.
